The Means To Settle (2019)
Gasoline Dreams (2019) and Spin City (2019) were shown as part of The Means to Settle, a group exhibition that took place in the Frank Kitts Carpark in Wellington, New Zealand (10/10/19).
The Means to Settle was an exhibition of site responsive works exploring concepts of ephemerality and ‘other space’. The artists intervened through time-based media, performance and installation for a one night only event in the Frank Kitts Underground Carpark.
Gasoline Dreams (2019) and Spin City (2019) were a pair of works which were created in response to the industrial environment of Frank Kitts Carpark in Wellington's CBD. The work was created by remixing and reworking footage from Godfrey Reggio's 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi. Koyaanisqatsi is an experimental non-narrative film which explored the rapid technological changes of the modern era, as well as themes of creation and destruction. By reworking this imagery and presenting it spatially in an industrial space, Carlier raises questions about how the world has changed, and what the relevance of Koyaanisqatsi's themes and imagery are in the 21st century.
